Electricity is the flow of electrons. When zinc oxidizes and exchanges electrons with copper, energy is released. (Dirt, penny, galvanized nail, wire, bulb). Linda Dong.
Maxwell von Stein, a 22-year-old graduate of The Cooper Union, built bicycle that uses a flywheel to store energy. Instead of braking, Max can transfer energy from the wheel to the flywheel, which spins between the crossbars. The flywheel stores the kinetic energy until Max wants a boost, then he can transfer the energy back to the wheel using a shifter on the handlebars. production, filming: ian chant, aleszu bajak, flora lichtman. music: prelinger archives. additional images: Maxwell von Stein. Expedition 30 astronaut Don Pettit uses knitting needles and water droplets to demonstrate physics in space through ‘Science off the Sphere.’ This is part of the first video in a series for a partnership between NASA and the American Physical Society to share unique videos from the International Space Station with students, educators and science fans from around the world.
Space is just too cool :P
Caddis fly larvae are known to incorporate bits of whatever they can find into their cocoons, be it fish bone or bits of leaves. Hubert Duprat gave them gold, turquoise, gems and pearls.

The Sun
The sun fuses 620 million metric tons of hydrogen per second into 616 million metric tons of helium. About 4 million tons of mass go “missing” every second. Of course it’s not really missing, it all gets converted into energy and every second the sun spews 4 million tons of energy in the form of light and heat across our solar system. Only about 3.6 pounds of this “missing” mass ever reaches Earth. Think about that for a minute. 3.6 pounds of mass powers all the plants, all of the animals, everyone of us on this planet. 3.6 pounds is the difference between night and day, summer and winter, life and death. Out of 4 million tons of mass per second? 3.6 pounds is pocket change.

Hey, Who Ripped Open a Hole in the Universe?
This eerie patch of blackness in the middle of a busy star cluster may look like a rather misshapen black hole, but it’s actually something even stranger. It’s also quite possibly the loneliest, darkest, coldest place in the entire cosmos.
This is Barnard 68, and it’s what’s known as a dark molecular cloud. Basically, the dust and gas that makes up Barnard 68 is so tightly packed together that it blocks out all the light behind it. The result might look like some alien civilization tore apart the fabric of the universe and opening up a gateway to the howling void, but thankfully - or unfortunately, I guess, depending on how you feel about the howling void - it’s just gas. Make that a lot of gas.
Here’s some additional info on this particular patch of darkness:
No, it is not a piece of modern art, though it would not be a stretch of the imagination to see these colourful images up on your wall. These figures are part of a new project to create a periodic table of shapes that could become a useful resource for mathematicians and theoretical physicists. It is a collection of shapes across three, four and five dimensions that cannot be broken down into simpler shapes. Researchers find these basic building blocks of the universe, known as “Fano varieties”, by looking for solutions to string theory, which assumes that in addition to space and time there are other hidden dimensions.
The idea is simple and, like its central element, forcefully attractive. Ahmed Mater gives a twist to a magnet and sets in motion tens of thousands of particles of iron, a multitude of tiny satellites that forms a single swirling nimbus. Even if we have not taken part in it, we have all seen images of the Hajj, the great annual pilgrimage of Muslims to Mecca. Ahmed’s black cuboid magnet is a small simulacrum of the black-draped Ka’bah, the ‘Cube’, that central element of the Meccan rites. His circumambulating whirl of metallic filings mirrors in miniature the concentric tawaf of the pilgrims, their sevenfold circling of the Ka’bah.

Glass Beach is a unique beach, not because nature made it that way, but because time and the pounding surf have corrected one of man’s mistakes.
Beginning in 1949, the area around Glass Beach became a public dump. It is hard to imagine this happening today, but back then people dumped all kinds of refuse straight into the ocean, including old cars, and their household garbage, which of course included lots of glass.
By the early sixties, some attempts were made to control what was dumped, and dumping of any toxic items was banned. Finally in 1967, the North Coast Water Quality Board realized what a mistake it was and plans were begun for a new dump away from the ocean…
Now, over 30 years later, Mother Nature has reclaimed this beach. Years of pounding wave action have deposited tons of polished glass onto the beach. You’ll still see the occasional reminder of it earlier life, such as a rusted spark plug, but for the most part what you’ll see is millions of pieces of glass sparkling in the sun. (As part of MacKerricher State Park, collecting is no longer allowed).
The earth will be okay once it shakes us off for good. Only then can it heal.
